WQ # 23: ¡Fiesta!

Description

It’s Fiesta, today! Everyone in the town is busy and excited about preparing for tonight’s parade. The traditional dinner is prepared and the air smells of the sweet candies and desserts. Music and noise are all around, and the children are excited about the events tonight. It is really fascinating to see the whole town celebrate the festival. Since this is a very unique tradition in this country, you would like to present it in your class, when you are back in the U.S.

Task

You are to make a multimedia presentation of this unique event for your class. You will explain the history of the event and how people celebrate the event, such as decorations, foods, costumes, games, parades, etc. You will include pictures, audio clips, or video clips in order to give a vivid description of the event. At the end of the presentation, you will have a short summary of comparison to explain the similarities or differences between this event and U.S. tradition.

Process

1. First, browse the suggested sites (A) and choose the holiday that is unique in your visiting country (or the country of your choice) and most interesting to you.

2. Second, using the sample search engine suggested in (B) or any other ones that you are most familiar with, find out the history, traditions (e.g. decorations, foods, costumes, games, parades, etc.), and uniqueness of the holiday. Use the name of the holiday as keyword. Keep your source information (e.g. Web site address of the information that you will include in your presentation) for proper citation.

3. Third, find out from the Web resources, the differences or similarities of this holiday compared to U.S. customs and traditions that are most close to this. Summarize your findings and analysis.

4. Fourth, collect multimedia resources (graphics, photo, audio, or video) on the holiday. If you use any resources downloaded from the Web, keep the source information. If you have resources of your own (e.g. picture or videos that you have taken, etc), you are encouraged to use your resources for the presentation.

5. Create your multimedia presentation on this holiday in Spanish. Include the components that you have found and analyzed. Include proper citations of the information sources.

6. Check your presentation with one of your Spanish speaking colleague teachers at your partner school.

7. Keep a copy (electronic or hardcopy version) of your presentation in your professional portfolio.

Conclusion

You created a great presentation! Your students can see the uniqueness of the tradition, histories and ideas behind the celebration, and compare the thoughts between two different cultures – U.S. and Latin American.
