WQ #15: ¡Alguien estaba aquí!

Description

“Please, come here and help me!” One of your colleague-teachers just called you in a hurry. She just came back home from school and found that someone had broken into her apartment during the day. She needs to report to the police about the incident and the missing items, but she needs your help with Spanish. Could you help her with this?

Task

To help her report to the police, you will describe the changes in the house that she found on her arrival and make a list of the things that are missing. You may find some traces of the intruder, if both of you look carefully. You may then add those findings to the report as evidence.

Resources

Process

1. First, visit the suggested sites (A) about the parts of house and household items to refresh your knowledge of Spanish vocabulary on the topic.

2. Second, prepare a short description of the house at the time your colleague came back from school. (Imagine yourself in the burglary situation.) Focus on what she found changed when she came back. For example, she found that the living room windows which she had locked before she left were open, the bedroom door was found open, kitchen window was broken, etc. (See sample report here)

3. Third, list the missing items from the house. For example, a boom-box in the living room was missing; a fax machine in the study was missing, etc.

4. If you find any traces of the intruder, list them in the report. For example, you found several footsteps in the kitchen near the windows, etc.

5. If you find specific words that are not listed in the suggested sites in (A) in Spanish, look them up with an online dictionary (B).

6. Check your report with one of your Spanish speaking neighbor, before sending it to the police.

7. Keep a copy of the report in your professional portfolio.

Conclusion

Thank you for your help! Your detailed description of the changes that were found in the house, description of the items that were stolen, and evidence that you’ve found led the police to a narrower search. With the information you provided, the police will be able to catch the intruder soon.
